Increase in Hand Baggage Allowance on British Airways services 04 January 2008

Following an announcement by the UK Department for Transport, British Airways will re-introduce the two-piece cabin bag allowance for passengers with effect from January 07th, 2008.

From this date, all customers departing or transferring through London Heathrow, London City, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Manchester, will be able to carry two pieces of hand baggage through security. Therefore, as well as the currently permitted allowance of one piece of hand baggage, customers will be able to carry a briefcase or laptop sized bag.

In summary the new allowance is as follows;

  • One bag no bigger than 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm (22 inches x 17.5 inches x 9.85 inches), including wheels, pockets and handles
  • In addition, one briefcase or laptop sized bag
  • For each of the above, a 23kg maximum weight per bag applies, and the customer must be able to lift the bag into the overhead locker in the aircraft cabin unaided.

Please note that other UK airports are expected to remove restrictions in line with the new UK Department for Transport guidelines in a phased approach. Until this comes into effect, the one-bag allowance will remain in place for other UK airports. Customers flying to/from or transferring through other UK airports should check with the airline before travelling. This includes customers who fly from another UK airport and transfer through Heathrow, London City, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Manchester.

Restrictions on the quantity of liquids allowed through airport security search remain unchanged. Customers must ensure that all liquid containers do not exceed 100ml and are carried in a clear, re-sealable plastic bag that can be easily closed.
