FAQs for changes to Jetstar Classic Awards

Overall changes

1. What changes are being made to Qantas & Partner Classic Awards booked on Jetstar?

A number of changes are being made to the way our members book Classic Awards on Jetstar operated flights. These changes are designed to provide better value for our members and to expand the network available for Classic Award bookings. Specifically:

  1. Qantas & Partner Classic Award flight bookings on Jetstar (JQ) operated flights will no longer be made on QF flight numbers. From 8 April 2013 all new Classic Award bookings on these flights will be booked on a JQ flight number.
  2. From 8 April 2013 members will be able to redeem points for a Classic Award on Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) and Jetstar Japan (GK) flights. These bookings will be made using the flight number of the operating carrier i.e. 3K, VF and/or GK.
  3. From 8 April 2013 a new points table is being introduced for Classic Award bookings only on Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) and Jetstar Japan (GK) or any combination of these carriers. The new table is designed to provide a lower-points option for members to redeem for travel on Jetstar. Members can also combine Classic Award flights on Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) and/or Jetstar Japan (GK) flights with other partner airlines; the points you need will depend on the routes chosen.

2. Why are these changes being made?

These changes represent an improvement to the benefits our members receive from the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. Specifically the changes:

  1. Allow members to book directly onto JQ, 3K, VF and/or GK flight numbers, which provides greater clarity on the carrier they will be travelling on and the level of product and service they will receive.
  2. Expand the Classic Award network to include Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) and Jetstar Japan (GK) flights to provide members with more opportunities to use their points.
  3. Improve the value when redeeming points for Classic Awards on applicable Jetstar flights (with a JQ, 3K, VF or GK flight number) by introducing the new Jetstar Classic Award points table.

Points required

3. Will these changes mean fewer points for all Classic Award bookings on Jetstar (JQ)?

From 8 April 2013 members booking Classic Award trips on flights with JQ flight numbers only will receive a 20% reduction in the points required compared with current points levels when booked on flights with a QF flight number. The number of points required for Classic Award bookings with JQ, 3K, VF and/or GK flights only will be calculated from the new Jetstar Classic Award table.

When Classic Award flights on JQ, 3K, VF and/or GK are combined with other partner airline flights (including Qantas), the points required will depend on the routes chosen and the Jetstar Classic Award table may not be applicable. For further information, please see the Classic Award tables and the Qantas Frequent Flyer terms and conditions.

4. How can I check how many points I need for a Classic Award on a Jetstar flight?

The new Classic Award table for Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) and Jetstar Japan (GK) is available on qantas.com. For all Classic Award bookings, members can check the number of points required on any partner airline by signing into their Qantas Frequent Flyer account and searching for Classic Award availability for their selected itinerary. Once flights have been selected, the points required will be displayed prior to the completion of the booking, giving members the opportunity to continue with the booking, abandon the booking or start again and search for other options as required.

Effective date

5. When will these changes become effective?

Changes will be effective for all new Classic Award bookings made from 8 April 2013 on Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) and Jetstar Japan (GK) flights. Members with existing Classic Award bookings on Jetstar operated flights will not be affected and will still travel on their booked QF flight number.

New and existing bookings

6. How do I book a Classic Award on a Jetstar flight?

From 8 April 2013 all Classic Award bookings on Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) and Jetstar Japan (GK) flights must be made at qantas.com or by calling Qantas Direct on 13 13 13. Members must be signed into their Qantas Frequent Flyer account to make Award bookings online. Please note that an Award Assistance Fee may apply to bookings made over the phone. Jetstar Classic Award bookings cannot be made on jetstar.com. Classic Awards are subject to availability.

7. How early can I book Classic Awards on JQ, 3K, VF and GK flights?

Subject to availability, from 8 April 2013 Classic Award seats on JQ, 3K, VF and GK flights can be booked from up to 330 days in advance of departure.

8. Can I book a Jetstar Classic Award flight as part of a oneworld Classic Award itinerary?

No. The oneworld® Classic Award table applies when the Award itinerary includes at least two oneworld® alliance airlines other than Qantas. As members will no longer book Jetstar Classic Awards using a QF flight number, flights operated by Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) or Jetstar Japan (GK) cannot be part of a oneworld itinerary, as these carriers are not members of the oneworld alliance.

9. What do I need to do if I already have a Qantas & Partner Classic Award booked on Jetstar with a QF flight number?

Nothing. You can travel on your flight as booked.

10. What happens if I already have a Qantas & Partner Classic Award booked on Jetstar with a QF flight number and need to cancel my flight?

There are no changes to the current process for cancelling a Qantas & Partner Classic Award flight booked on Jetstar. Note that a Cancellation Refund Fee will apply. Service Fees may also apply if you request a refund by calling Qantas Direct on 13 13 13. Please refer to the Qantas & Partner Classic Award conditions.

11. What happens if I already have a Qantas & Partner Classic Award booked on Jetstar with a QF flight number and need to change my flight?

Members holding a Classic Award booking on a Jetstar flight with a QF flight number can continue to make changes to their booking in accordance with the Program Terms and Conditions. Changes can be made online at qantas.com or via Qantas Direct on 13 13 13. Changes not made via qantas.com may incur a Service Fee. All changes to Classic Award bookings will incur a Change Fee in points and may require the redemption of additional points as well as any difference in taxes, fees and carrier charges. Please refer to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program terms and conditions.

12. Are there any changes to Any Seat Awards for Jetstar as a result of the changes to the points required for a Classic Award on Jetstar?

No. Any Seat Awards are not linked to the points required for a Classic Award and Jetstar Any Seat Awards will continue to be offered as they are today.

13. Can I redeem my points on the entire JQ, 3K, VF and GK networks or are there routes that cannot be booked as a Classic Award?

All routes on the Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), Valuair (VF) and Jetstar Japan (GK) networks can be booked as a Classic Award, subject to availability.

14. Can I add a Classic Award flight on JQ, 3K, VF or GK to an existing commercial or Award flight booking?

No. However, you can make a separate Classic Award booking. For example, if you have an existing paid ticket to fly from Melbourne to Singapore return, and want to add a side-trip to Hong Kong, you can make a separate Jetstar Classic Award booking, subject to availability.
