Whether you are travelling for an extended holiday or relocating overseas, sometimes packing to meet your baggage allowance can be a challenge. Passengers travelling with more baggage than the allowances are required to pay excess baggage charges.

However, these charges can sometimes be prohibitive. That is why Qantas offers passengers an unaccompanied baggage service, on most routes, as a convenient and cost-effective alternative to paying excess baggage.

To avoid excess baggage charges, you can send excess baggage as unaccompanied baggage. This alternative means of transporting your personal belongings may not offer the convenience of having your baggage travel on your flight, but can provide a significant cost saving.

There are some handling costs and additional customs charges, but rates for unaccompanied baggage are often considerably less than those for excess baggage.

For a detailed cost estimate please contact your local Qantas Freight Reservations Office.
Sending Unaccompanied Baggage

To send unaccompanied baggage, you must hold an international ticket, for travel on any airline, between the origin and destination shown on the ticket.

Baggage is sent on a 'space available' basis, this means that your baggage will not necessarily travel on the same flight as you.

If you require your unaccompanied baggage to be available for collection on your arrival, it is recommended that your baggage be sent two or three days prior to your departure. This may vary according to your destination, so please contact your local Qantas Freight Reservations Office for more details.

Bookings are not required to consign your unaccompanied baggage. Simply present your baggage together with your valid airline ticket and photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport, at the appropriate facility, where the necessary documentation can be completed.
