This supplementary information is provided to inform candidates about the Qantas Swinburne Bachelor of Aviation Option of the Qantas Cadet Pilot Program.

What is the Qantas Swinburne Bachelor Degree and Graduate Cerificate Program?

The Bachelor Degree and Graduate Certificate program is a combined offering by Qantas and Swinburne University of Technology in Victoria. Phase One includes a Bachelor'Degree and Graduate Certificate, plus a theory and flight training course, requiring the student to be both a University student and a Qantas Cadet. In order to graduate, the Cadet must consistently remain in good standing in both programs from the perspective of both Qantas and the University.

The Bachelor Degree of Aviation and Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) is accredited and awarded by Swinburne University of Technology.

The classes relevant to the Qantas Swinburne Bachelor of Aviation and Graduate Certificate will be delivered at Hawthorn campus, Melbourne (Victoria). Theory and flight training will be completed at a participating Flight Training Organisation (i.e. General Flying Services at Moorabbin Airport, Victoria).

What is involved in the Qantas Swinburne Bachelor Degree and Graduate Certificate Program?

The Qantas Swinburne Bachelor of Aviation and Graduate Certificate Program is a three year program incorporating flight training and academic studies in Aviation Human Factors, Air Transportation Management and Aviation Technology. Graduates from this program will have, in addition to their flying qualifications, a broader Aviation education that will prepare them for possible future management roles within the aviation industry.

Cadets enrolled in this program will be enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place in the Bachelor of Aviation and may be eligible for financial assistance for units covering academic studies. Further information about Commonwealth Supported Places is available on the DEEWR Going to Uni website.

The flying component is undertaken by enrolment as a Full Fee student in the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting)

Commonwealth assistance is available to eligible students to assist with fees for the Bachelor of Aviation and Graduate Certificate program. Please refer to "Is financial assistance available" for details.

What is the cost of Phase One of the Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Certificate Program?

As a guide, the 2008 annual Swinburne Student Contribution Amount for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Aviation was $7,118 (standard full time load) or $890 per unit of study. 2009 fees will be published in August on the Swinburne Student Fees website

What other expenses may I incur?

There is a list of University administrative and miscellaneous charges which students may incur during their university career on the Swinburne Student Fees website under "Ancillary Fees".

Other expenses a student may incur include textbooks, accommodation costs and general living expenses.

Is financial assistance available?

Cadets may wish to use the Federal Government's HECS-HELP Scheme to offset a large portion of the academic components of the Bachelor Degree. In addition, cadets may wish to use the Federal Government's FEE-HELP Scheme to offset a large portion of the upfront costs of the Graduate Certificate.
Whilst utilising FEE-HELP an Bachelor Degree and Graduate Certificate Cadet could expect to offset up to $81,600 (currently for 2008) of the flying training unit fees.

It is expected that any Australian citizen admitted into the Qantas Cadet Program and Bachelor of Aviation and Graduate Certificate will be eligible for Commonwealth Assistance. Australian Permanent Residents and New Zealand citizens are not eligible for either HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP:

  • Bachelor Degree- Eligible students may request HECS-HELP assistance with the Student Contribution Amount payable for each University unit of study. Eligible students who chose to pay up-front may receive a discount.
  • Graduate Certificate- Eligible students may request FEE_HELP assistance with the Tuition Fees payable for each unit of study.

Can Qantas help me organise funding for the Bachelor Degree and Graduate Certificate Program??

Bachelor Degree and Graduate Certificate Cadets who are assessed by Qantas as having successfully graduated from the Degree and Graduate Certificate may have the option of accessing a line of credit from the Qantas Staff Credit Union up to a maximum of A$60,000. This funding can be used to facilitate payment of their Cadet Industry Placement Program (CIPP) qualifications contribution and to repay some or all of any existing loans associated with the cost of their University studies and flight training.

The Credit Union line of credit would be in addition to the HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP detailed above.

What are the entry requirements for this program?

In addition to the Qantas Cadet Pilot Program Minimum Criteria, applicants must have satisfactorily completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, the following subjects, or equivalent, forming the prerequisites for the course.

VCE Units 3 & 4 - a study score of at least 20 in English (any) and Mathematical Methods. Please note, students must complete both Unit 3 and 4 of Mathematical Methods, however the minimum study score may be obtained in either Unit 3 or 4.

Passes maybe accumulated over more than one year.

Can I get credit/recognition for my previous flight training?

If you hold a Private Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence (PPL(A)) you may able to obtain credit for this flying. If you wish to be considered for this recognition or credit, you will be required to undertake a PPL(A) standards check at your designated Cadet Flight Training Organisation. This will include undertaking a flight assessment of approximately 2.5 hours, with the format being similar to that stipulated by CASA for initial issue of a Private Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence (CPL(A)), including the ground component. Upon completion you will be advised of the outcome. Those not at the required standard will be required to undertake the full flying training syllabus.

How do I apply?

You should apply for the 2009 Qantas Cadet Pilot Program as per the instructions on the application form. On your application you will be asked indicate your preference of Program.

The University will confirm eligibility for the Bachelor Degree and Graduate Certificate with with Qantas and undertake an academic qualification check to ensure the applicant meets entry requirements during the selection process. Qantas will advise candidates of the outcome of their application for the Cadet Pilot Program. Successful candidates will also be provided the appropriate University application form and enrolment information.

Can I apply for both the Bachelor Degree and the Qantas Cadet Program?

Candidates who are interested in the Bachelor Degree and Graduate Certificate Program may also wish to submit a separate application for the Bachelor of Aviation in case they are not successful obtaining a position in the Cadet Program.

Applicants are required to meet the degree entry requirements. Selection is based on ENTER score and interview.

For semester 1 intake, applicants would be required to submit both an application via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC code 34511) and Swinburne Request for Interview before 26 September 2008.
