This supplementary information is provided to inform candidates about the Qantas Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation and Graduate Diploma in Flight Management Option of the Qantas Cadet Pilot Program.

What is the Qantas Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation and Graduate Diploma Program?

The Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Diploma Program is a joint offering by Qantas and Griffith University in Queensland. Phase One includes a Bachelor of Aviation and a Graduate Diploma in Flight Management, which includes a theory and flight training course, requiring the student to be both a University student and a Qantas Cadet. In order to graduate, the Cadet must consistently remain in good standing in both programs from the perspective of both Qantas and the University.

The tutorials and lectures relevant to the Bachelor of Aviation Degree will be delivered at the Nathan campus, Brisbane (Queensland) or via distance learning where applicable. Theory and flight training will be completed at the Airline Academy of Australia, situated at Archerfield Airport in Brisbane, 10 minutes drive from Griffith University.

At completion of Phase One, successful Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Diploma Cadets will have:

Cadets may wish to use the Federal Governments FEE-HELP scheme to offset the upfront cost of the Graduate Diploma. This will include, but is not limited to the costs of the flight training components set out above.

Am I eligible for the Qantas Griffith University Graduate Diploma Program?

To be eligible to apply for entry into the Qantas Griffith University Graduate Diploma in Flight Management you must be a student in the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation and have successfully completed 3 semesters of prescribed academic courses.

What is the cost of the Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Diploma Program?

The anticipated University tuition fees for the 2009 Cadets undertaking the Bachelor's Degree is approximately $16,000 for the Bachelor's Degree component. Students may wish to use the Federal Government's HECS-HELP Scheme to offset these costs.

The cost of University tuition fees for the Graduate Diploma will be approximately $82,400. Cadets may wish to use the Federal Government's FEE-HELP Scheme to offset a large portion of the up-front costs of the Graduate Diploma. Whilst utilising FEE-HELP a Graduate Diploma Cadet could expect to offset up to $81,600. This includes but is not limited to the cost of University tuition fees for the Graduate Diploma including flight training competencies.

What expenses will I incur outside that aren't available through FEE-HELP?

There is a list of University administrative and miscellaneous charges which students may incur during their university career on the Griffith University Website.

Information regarding the exact cost for these items will be available from the approved Flight Training Organisation or the University. Other unforeseen expenses may occur from time to time.

Is financial assistance available?

Flight Training is a component of the Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Diploma Program. It is at the discretion of the individual how the Program is paid for, however, eligible students may wish to use FEE-HELP to assist with the payment. FEE-HELP is a loan available to eligible students to cover the tuition fee.

Whilst utilising FEE-HELP a Cadet could expect to offset up to $81,600. This includes but is not limited to the cost of University tuition fees for the Graduate Diploma including flight training competencies.

Is everyone eligible for FEE-HELP?

It is expected that any Australian citizen selected for the Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Diploma Program will be eligible for FEE-HELP. Australian Permanent Residents and New Zealand citizens are not eligible for FEE-HELP.

Can Qantas help me organise additional funds for the Qantas Cadet Pilot Program?

Cadets who are assessed by Qantas as having successfully graduated from the Graduate Diploma will have the option of accessing a line of credit from the Qantas Staff Credit Union up to a maximum of A$60,000. This funding can be used to facilitate payment of their Cadet Industry Placement Program (CIPP) qualifications contribution and to repay some or all of any existing loans associated with the cost of their University studies and flying training.

The Credit Union line of credit would be in addition to the FEE-HELP detailed above.

How do I apply for the Qantas Griffith Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Diploma Program?

In order to be eligible for the Qantas Griffith Bachelor's Degree and Graduate Diploma Program, you must be a student who has successfully completed 3 semesters of prescribed academic courses in the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation. This will be in July of your second year, assuming you start your degree at the beginning of the year. A minimum grade of Pass will normally be required for all 90 credit points of the Bachelor of Aviation courses.

For entry into the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation Degree program you are required to apply via QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre). Further information regarding this process is set out in the next section.

By way of example, consider a student researching the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation in 2008 for commencement in 2009. If they wished to apply for the Qantas Griffith Graduate Diploma in Flight Management, the process would be as follows:

If you commence study in the mid-year intake you would be required to wait until you have completed 4 semesters of your degree so as to coincide with the Qantas Cadet Pilot Training Program application time frames.

Can I get credit/recognition for my previous flight training?

If you have passed the General Flying Progress Test (GFPT) or hold a Private Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence (PPL (A)) you may be able to obtain credit for this flying. If you wish to be considered for this recognition or credit, you will be required to undertake a GFPT or PPL (A) standards check at your designated Cadet Flight Training Organisation. This will include undertaking a flight assessment of approximately 2.5 hours, with the format being similar to that stipulated by CASA for the GFPT or initial issue of a Private Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence (PPL(A)), including the ground component. Upon completion you will be advised of the outcome. Those not at the required standard will be required to undertake the full flying training syllabus.

How do I apply for entry into the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation?

For entry into the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation Degree program you are required to apply via QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre). QTAC applications may be made via the QTAC website . The QTAC number for the Bachelor of Aviation is 228182. Please note that applicants must apply by the set deadlines as outlined by QTAC and detailed on the QTAC website. Applicants are required to meet the degree entry requirements. Can I apply if I am currently undertaking year two or three of the Griffith Bachelor of Aviation?

Yes. Qantas and Griffith University will consider current Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation students in line with the Cadet Pilot Selection Schedule. Staff members from Griffith University will provide detailed written advice and host an Information Day for students who are currently in year two or year three of the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation Degree. Following the provision of this advice, students will be invited to apply for the Qantas Griffith University Graduate Diploma in Flight Management Program.

Can I apply if I am in my first year of a Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation?

No. In order to be eligible, you must have successfully completed the first 3 semesters of the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation.

What is meant by "successful" completion of three semesters of prescribed academic courses?

Successful completion of three semesters means a minimum grade of "Pass" for 90 credit points of courses from the Bachelor of Aviation at Griffith University.

When I become eligible how do I apply for the Qantas Griffith Graduate Diploma in Flight Management?

You should apply to Qantas using the online application form. In the application, you should indicate your preference for the Qantas Griffith University Graduate Diploma in Flight Management. You should also notify Griffith University Aviation of your application.

Upon receipt of your application Qantas will notify Griffith University. An assessment of academic standard will then be undertaken by Griffith University. This combined with an interview with the Head of Aviation at Griffith University (or a nominee) will determine a student's suitability to proceed with their application for the Qantas Cadet Pilot Program. Applicants will be informed of their application status once the academic qualification check and Griffith University interview outcome has been determined. Griffith University Aviation will inform Qantas Pilot Recruitment of those students who meet the eligibility criteria.

Qantas Pilot Recruitment will then follow the same process as for other cadets. At the conclusion of the Qantas selection process Qantas Pilot Recruitment will inform Griffith University Aviation of the outcome. Once Griffith University has received confirmation, they will notify the student and if successful, enrolment documentation will be forwarded

What does the selection process involve?

As described above, Griffith University will undertake an academic qualification check and interview in the first instance. Subsequently, the selection process for Qantas Griffith Cadets is the same for other Cadets. Further details can be found in the Cadet Selection Process Brief.

Once accepted to the program as a Cadet, how and where do I complete my Degree?

Once accepted as a Qantas Griffith University Cadet you will continue to be enrolled in the Bachelor of Aviation Degree and will complete this qualification concurrently with the Qantas Griffith University Graduate Diploma in Flight Management. It is expected that both of these programs would be completed within 12 months of beginning the Qantas Griffith University Graduate Diploma in Flight Management.

The Qantas Griffith University Graduate Diploma in Flight Management will be conducted at a Qantas approved Flight Training Organisation (FTO) allocated to you by Griffith University. The Bachelor of Aviation courses may be completed by distance education, on campus, online or a combination of both.

Can I apply as a Cadet if I am completing a degree at another University?

No. However, you may apply to transfer to the Griffith University Bachelor of Aviation if you have only completed a maximum of one semester at another University before transferring to Griffith University.

Will I receive credit for the study completed at the other University if I transfer to the Griffith

Yes, credit for previous study undertaken at another institution is available. You will be required to apply for credit through the standard Griffith University credit application process, details of this process is available at the Griffith University Website.

The amount of credit awarded to your program will be assessed on a case by case basis and will be based upon the relevance of the previous study to the current program.

What happens if my application as a Cadet is unsuccessful?

If you are unsuccessful, Griffith University will contact you regarding options which may be available to you. You will still be eligible to complete your Bachelor of Aviation with Griffith University if your application for the Cadet Program is unsuccessful. You will also be eligible to apply to undertake the Griffith University Graduate Diploma in Flight Management but will not be a Qantas Cadet.
