Minimum Criteria for Direct Entry Pilots

Qantas Flight Operations is currently accepting applications from suitably qualified pilots who wish to undertake the highly competitive Qantas Pilot Selection Process.

Candidates who successfully complete this process and are selected for employment will join Qantas as Trainee Second Officers.

After passing an intensive training program they will graduate as Second Officers.

You must meet the minimum criteria in all areas before your application for employment can be accepted. If you forward an incomplete application, it will be returned to you.

Fully completed Bachelor’s Degree of any discipline

Hold Australian Permanent Residency Status
  Australian Birth Certificate, or

Valid Australian passport, or

Overseas passport with Australian Permanent Residency visa
Hours    
500 hours in command of a powered fixed wing aircraft (excluding ICUS), or

250 hours in command of a powered fixed wing aircraft (of which up to 100 hours may be ICUS) and 1000 hours First Officer time on turbine RPT operations, or

150 hours in command of a powered fixed wing aircraft (excluding ICUS) and 1500 hours First Officer time on turbine RPT operations, or

250 hours in command of a powered fixed wing aircraft (of which up to 100 hours may be ICUS) and 500 hours in command of rotary wing aircraft.

Hold or have held endorsements for NDB, VOR, ILS, DGA and LLZ on an Australian Civil Instrument Rating

* Pass generally means an examination mark of 50/100 or better.
# The lowest level of Year 12 Mathematics in most Australian states does not meet the pilot recruitment minimum criteria.
^ For overseas qualifications, a statement of equivalency from the NSW Board of Studies may be required. The suitability of subjects and the definition of a pass for Qantas Pilot Recruitment purposes is determined by Qantas rather than the relevant educational body.
** At date of employment with Qantas, candidates must hold a current Civil or Military (aeroplane) Instrument Rating, excluding a Private IFR Rating.

Additional Information on Educational Criteria

Candidates with overseas secondary education qualifications who believe their course of study may be equivalent to the NSW Year 12 Higher School Certificate (HSC) in English and Mathematics are required to obtain a Statement of Equivalence from the NSW Board of Studies. Candidates should provide a copy of both the Statement of Equivalence and their overseas education certificate with their application. Please note, candidates with secondary education qualifications from Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa or who have an International Baccalaureate are not required to provide a Statement of Equivalence.

Note: Original supporting documentation and 2 forms of photographic identification (for example: driver's licence and passport) will be required should you be invited to attend the selection process.
