Sporting equipment can be carried as baggage depending on the conditions of your ticket and what allowance you are permitted. Some of the more common carried items are:

There are four general baggage systems:
Refer to the conditions of your ticket, or contact your local Qantas Office, to check what system you should follow. A charge will apply for any baggage carried in addition to the free allowance. The carriage of baggage in addition to the free baggage allowance is subject to space being available.
To be accepted for carriage, bicycles must be suitably packed in a bike box. Bike boxes can be purchased from most Australian and New Zealand Qantas Terminals at a cost of A$16.50 or NZ$20 (including GST) or the local currency equivalent to A$15. Customers can travel with their own bike box, however it must not exceed the dimensions below.

A fishing kit consists of two rods, one reel, one landing net, one pair of boots and one tackle box. To be accepted for carriage, fishing rods must be protected in a PVC cylinder with screw ends, which can be obtained from a local fishing store, or in PVC plumbing or electrical tubing. Fishing rods must not be strapped to suitcases.

Fishing Kits are subject to a flat rate handling fee of NZ$20. The flat rate covers kits weighing up to 15kg (33lb). Fishing Kits over 15kg (33lb) will be charge NZ$20 plus NZ$5 per kg over 15kg (33lb).

A golf set consists of one golf bag including clubs, golf balls, and golf apparel. Golf bags and collapsible buggies are carried as baggage and are exempt from normal linear dimension restrictions.

Knives must be carried in checked baggage. Spear guns must be unloaded with spears packed separately.
Compressed gas tanks will only be accepted if empty and regulator tap is open.

One snow ski or snowboard kit consists of one pair of skis or one snowboard, one pair of stocks, and one pair of ski or snowboard boots. Snow skis and snowboards must be protected in a ski bag.

To carry a surfboard or surfski as baggage, fins must be removed where possible and placed in an enclosed compartment or taped to the board. Paddles must also be taped to the board. Qantas Check-in will attach a Fragile tag to the bag and you must complete and sign the limited release portion of the baggage tag.
