Fleet Developments

To ensure Qantas maintains their reputation as one of the leading airlines in the world, we are continuing to invest in new aircraft, aircraft enhancements and infrastructure. Our fleet now totals 194 aircraft and includes:

Airbus 380

The A380 will enable Qantas to carry more people, further, than ever before. Plus, its technical capabilities will deliver real operational efficiencies and significant improvements in terms of environmental performance.

We have ordered 12 A380 aircraft with options for 10 more, with the first aircraft being delivered in April 2007. The purchase of the A380 continues our multi-billion dollar program to provide the most up-to-date and efficient fleet.

The aircraft will be operated in a three class, 501 seat configuration on international services between Australia and the United States and on the Kangaroo Route to the United Kingdom. We will also make aviation history by operating the longest 500-passenger service in the world, flying between Melbourne and Los Angeles (12,749 km).

The interior design for the A380 aircraft will provide new levels of comfort for passengers and will feature, among other things new seat designs, special lounge areas, video on demand, internet capability and larger entertainment screens.

The first flight of the revolutionary new A380 aircraft occurred in Toulouse, France on 27 April 2005.

Boeing 737-800

We are continuing to build our fleet of modern 737-800s, so we can offer you a better product as well as delivering improvements to aircraft utilisation, reliability and on-time performance. A further ten 737-800s will be joining our fleet between December 2004 and December 2005. This will increase our 737-800 fleet to 33 by the end of 2005.

Bombardier Q400

Qantas will take delivery of seven new turboprop Bombardier Q400 aircraft in the first half of 2006. The new aircraft with a 72 seat configuration, mark a new era in regional air travel, with improved passenger comfort, jet-like speed and lower operating costs. At a cost of A$200 million, it represents the largest single investment Qantas has made in its regional turboprop fleet.

Qantas also has taken options and purchase rights over an additional 10 aircraft to be exercised subject to favourable market conditions and continuing QantasLink efficiency and productivity gains.
