Australian Woman of the Year in the UK Award 2009

Gill Hicks & Stephen Thompson

Together with Australian Business and Advance - Global Australians, Qantas is proud to sponsor the Australian Woman of the Year in the UK Award.

Following the success of the 2008 inaugural event the award has become an annual event, coinciding with International Women's Day, to celebrate successful Australian women in the United Kingdom.

Women from all walks of life are encouraged to apply for the award, whether success has been achieved through business or personal endeavours, the arts, sciences, professional disciplines, government, the community sector or any other field. The aim of the award is to showcase what Australian women have achieved whilst in the UK.

2009 Winner

Gill Hicks, survivor of the London bombings in 2005, has been named 2009 Australian Woman of the Year in the UK.

Gill was critically injured in the London attacks and lost both her legs, but since then has campaigned tirelessly for peace and justice.

She founded not-for profit organisation M.A.D. for Peace. M.A.D (or Making a Difference) helps to spread the word that conflict can be avoided through the actions of individuals at a community level, working in a positive way to promote peace.

Recently Gill was recognised for her services to charity by being honoured an MBE and in January 2009 she was also awarded the Australia Day Foundation 'Australian of the Year in the UK' at the Australian High Commission.
