This supplementary information is provided to inform candidates about the Qantas Swinburne Associate Degree of Aviation Option of the Qantas Cadet Pilot Program.

What is the Qantas Swinburne Associate Degree Program?

The Associate Degree Program is a combined offering by Qantas and Swinburne University of Technology in Victoria. Phase One includes an Associate Degree of Aviation plus a theory and flight training course, requiring the student to be both a University student and a Qantas Cadet. In order to graduate, the Cadet must consistently remain in good standing in both programs from the perspective of both Qantas and the University.

The Associate Degree of Aviation is accredited and awarded by Swinburne University of Technology.

The tutorials and lectures relevant to the Associate Degree will be delivered at Swinburne University (Hawthorn Campus) in Melbourne, Victoria. Theory and flight training will be completed at a participating Flight Training Organisation (i.e. General Flying Services at Moorabbin Airport, Victoria.

At completion of Phase One, successful Associate Degree Cadets will have:

• An Associate Degree of Aviation from Swinburne University of Technology.
• A Commercial Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence (CPL(A).
• A Command (Multi Engine Aeroplane) Instrument Rating.
• Credits for all Air Transport Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence theory subjects.
• Instruction designed to enhance the Cadets' aircraft management, multi-crew skills and their knowledge of Qantas operating procedures.
• 100 hours as Pilot in Command of a fixed wing aircraft.
• Approximately 200 hours total flying time supplemented by additional flight simulation time.
• 5 hours of dual aerobatics.
• Multi Engine Gas Turbine type rating.

Cadets may wish to use the Federal Governments FEE-HELP scheme to offset the upfront cost of the Associate Degree. This will include, but is not limited to the costs of the flight training components set out above.

What is involved in the Qantas Swinburne Associate Degree Program?

The Qantas Swinburne Associate Degree Program is a two year program delivered in accelerated format over 1.5 years. It has been designed to suit a Cadet Pilot Program and incorporates flight training with some academic studies in Aviation Human Factors and Air Transportation Management.

What is the cost of the Qantas Swinburne Associate Degree Program?

Students pay the University tuition fee for each unit of study. The tuition fee will include the flying theory and flight training fees. The University tuition fees for the 2009 Cadets undertaking the Associate Degree will be published in August on the Swinburne Student Fees website.

Commonwealth assistance is available to eligible students to assist with fees for the Associate Degree program. Please refer to "Is financial assistance available" for details.

What other expenses may I incur?

There is a list of University administrative and miscellaneous charges which students may incur during their university career on the Swinburne Student Fees website under "Ancillary Fees".

Other expenses a student may incur include textbooks, headsets, CASA exam fees, accommodation costs and general living expenses.

Can Qantas help me organise funding for the Associate Degree Program?

Associate Degree Cadets who are assessed by Qantas as having successfully graduated from the Associate Degree may have the option of accessing a line of credit from the Qantas Staff Credit Union up to a maximum of A$60,000. This funding can be used to facilitate payment of their Cadet Industry Placement Program (CIPP) qualifications contribution and to repay some or all of any existing loans associated with the cost of their University studies and flight training. Typically this is not available until after the completion of approximately 75% of each Program and is subject to Qantas Staff Credit Union lending criteria.

The Credit Union line of credit would be in addition to the FEE-HELP detailed above.

What are the entry requirements for this Program?

In addition to the Qantas Cadet Pilot Program Minimum Criteria, applicants must have satisfactorily completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or equivalent, with the following subjects forming the prerequisites for the course.

VCE Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 20 in English (any) and Further Mathematics.

Passes maybe accumulated over more than one year.

Can I get credit/recognition for my previous flight training?

If you hold a Private Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence (PPL(A)) you may able to obtain credit for this flying. If you wish to be considered for this recognition or credit, you will be required to undertake a PPL(A) standards check at your designated Cadet Flight Training Organisation. This will include undertaking a flight assessment of approximately 2.5 hours, with the format being similar to that stipulated by CASA for initial issue of a Private Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence (PPL(A)), including the ground component. You will be advised of the outcome shortly after completion. Those not at the required standard will be required to undertake the full flying training syllabus. However, those who meet the required standard will be exempt from the financial costs of this part of the syllabus but will be required to attend all theory classes.

How do I apply?

You should apply for the 2009 Qantas Cadet Pilot Program as per the instructions on the application form. On your application you will be asked to list your preference of Program.

The University will confirm eligibility for the Associate Degree with Qantas and undertake an academic qualification check to ensure the applicant meets entry requirements during the selection process. Qantas will advise candidates of the outcome of their application for the Cadet Pilot Program in line with the Selection Schedule. Successful candidates will also be provided the appropriate University application form and enrolment information.

Can I apply directly to the Associate Degree if my application to the Qantas CPP is not successful?

The Associate Degree is available only to students in 'employer reserved places' and who have been accepted into a Cadet Pilot Program.
