Checked Baggage Allowance

Effective for tickets issued from 2 May 2012, Qantas has made several changes to its international checked baggage allowances. The checked baggage allowances for Qantas international flights have changed from a weight allowance to a piece allowance with maximum weights.

There is also a change to the Business Class baggage allowance for Domestic travel effective for travel from 2 May 2012.

The amount of baggage you can check in for your flight varies depending on your itinerary, cabin class, Qantas Frequent Flyer status or Qantas Club membership.

Checked baggage allowances on Qantas and QantasLink ("QF") flights are set out below. To be carried without additional charge, your checked baggage must not exceed these allowances.

If you wish to carry additional baggage you may purchase Additional Baggage Allowance online for Qantas operated flights with a "QF' code. Conditions apply. If you have not pre-purchased sufficient Additional Baggage Allowance, excess baggage charges will apply at the airport for any pieces in excess of your checked baggage allowance. In addition, a heavy charge will apply at the airport if your allowance is 23kg per piece and any piece exceeds that weight. No single item of checked baggage may exceed 32kg.

Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club member allowances apply to travel on Qantas operated jet flights with a QF flight number on your ticket. Note: These benefits are not cumulative. For example, whether you are a Silver Frequent Flyer, a Qantas Club Member or both, the same allowance applies.

Acceptance of Checked Baggage is subject to:

  • our Conditions of Carriage;
  • compliance with applicable size and weight limits;
  • applicable laws and security measures including those imposed by airports; and
  • payment of any applicable charges for additional or excess baggage.

Even if your baggage meets the above requirements, we may refuse to carry it if it is not properly and securely packed.

For travel on other airlines, check the baggage allowances with the applicable carrier before you travel. You can find out the operating airline at Manage Your Booking.

Medical and Mobility Equipment

Passengers requiring it for their own use may also check in medical/life dependant equipment and two pieces of mobility equipment without additional cost. Visit our Mobility Assistance page for further information.

Unaccompanied Baggage

We offer an unaccompanied baggage service on most routes. This service may be a convenient and cost-effective alternative to paying excess baggage rates. You must hold a valid international ticket (for travel on any airline) between the origin and destination airports.

The baggage must be consigned at the freight terminal before your flight and can only consist of personal clothing and articles including books, portable music instruments and portable sporting equipment.

Unaccompanied Baggage is carried on a 'space available' basis to the destination, not necessarily on the same flight as the passenger.

Note: You may be required to pay handling or government customs and quarantine charges at the destination for your unaccompanied baggage.

Note: The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have placed restrictions on uplifting personal effects and household goods to the USA. These restrictions also apply to unaccompanied baggage accepted as freight to the USA.

For more information call 1300 373 444 within Australia or your local Qantas Freight Sales office.

Labelling, Locking and Wrapping

You must ensure each item of checked baggage is labelled with your name, address and contact details. We recommend that passengers lock their checked baggage. However, it may be necessary for governments, airports or their contractors to open and inspect your baggage as part of the security screening process. If your baggage is locked, and you are not present when it is necessary to open it, the lock may be broken by security screeners.

For passengers travelling to or from the United States, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises that passengers can avoid the need for locks to be broken by using a TSA recognised locking mechanism, which can be opened by the TSA. For further information, visit the TSA website.

Passengers who choose to utilise baggage-wrapping services offered at some airports should allow additional time to complete this process before check-in. If security wrapping needs to be removed for inspection by governments, airports or their contractors as part of the security screening process it will not be replaced.

We are unable to advise passengers at the time of check-in whether baggage will need to undergo additional security checks.
