Checked Baggage Allowance
The amount of baggage you can check in for your flight varies depending on your itinerary, cabin class, Qantas Frequent Flyer status or Qantas Club membership.
Checked baggage allowances on Qantas and QantasLink ("QF") flights are set out below. To be carried without additional charge, your checked baggage must not exceed these allowances.
For tickets issued from 26 February 2013, new Qantas checked baggage allowances will apply on international routes (excluding flights to / from the Americas^) for travel on or after 31 March 2013+. The allowance will move from a piece policy (with a maximum weight per piece), to a weight policy.
When your itinerary contains travel on airlines other than Qantas, (ie flights that do not have a "QF" flight number) the following rules apply. Your specific baggage allowance will be available on the 'Review' page before you complete your booking. If you've already booked, you can find out your baggage allowance at Manage Your Booking. Or if you booked through a travel agent you may wish to contact them.
1. For travel other than from the USA and where your ultimate destination is not within the USA
Different baggage allowances may apply each time you check-in your baggage. If you check in your baggage for a multiple sector journey, the baggage policy of the most significant carrier in the itinerary will apply.
2. For travel to, from or within the USA
Under US DOT regulations, if your travel to, from or within the USA involves one or more airlines with flights that do not have a "QF" flight number, the airline whose flight number appears first on your ticket will determine whether its baggage rules or another airline's baggage rules will apply to all the flights in your itinerary. For travel between Australia and the USA, usually (but not always) Qantas' baggage rules will apply.
Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club members
Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club member allowances apply to travel on Qantas and Qantaslink operated flights with a QF flight number on your ticket, excluding services to and from Lord Howe Island, Olympic Dam and Mount Hotham. For tickets purchased from
26 February 2013, these additional allowances will also apply to Emirates operated ("EK") flights between and within Europe, The Middle East, North Africa and Asia, and Australia when travelling under either QF or EK flight numbers#. Note: These benefits are not cumulative. For example, whether you are a Silver Qantas Frequent Flyer, a Qantas Club member or both, the same allowance applies.
Additional Baggage
If you wish to carry additional baggage you may purchase Additional Baggage Allowance online for Qantas operated flights with a "QF' code. Conditions apply. If you have not pre-purchased sufficient Additional Baggage Allowance, excess baggage charges will apply at the airport for any pieces in excess of your checked baggage allowance. In addition, a heavy charge will apply at the airport if your allowance is 23kg per piece and any piece exceeds that weight. No single item of checked baggage may exceed 32kg.
Acceptance of Checked Baggage
Acceptance of Checked Baggage is subject to:
- our Conditions of Carriage;
- compliance with applicable size and weight limits;
- applicable laws and security measures including those imposed by airports; and
- payment of any applicable charges for additional or excess baggage.
Even if your baggage meets the above requirements, we may refuse to carry it if it is not properly and securely packed.

Where possible, we will endeavour to carry Checked Baggage on the same flight as the passenger. However, Checked Baggage may at times need to be transported on a later flight, in which case we will deliver your Checked Baggage to you unless you are required to be present for customs clearance.
If transferring from a Qantas Domestic flight to a Qantas International flight, or vice versa, within 24 hours, the International Baggage Allowance is accepted on both flights. Present both tickets when checking baggage in.
Medical and Mobility Equipment
Passengers requiring it for their own use may also check in medical/life dependant equipment and two pieces of mobility equipment without additional cost. For US flights only, there is no limit on the number of pieces of Mobility Equipment allowed to be carried for customers with a disability. Visit our Mobility Assistance page for further information.
Unaccompanied Baggage
We offer an unaccompanied baggage service on most routes. This service may be a convenient and cost-effective alternative to paying excess baggage rates. You must hold a valid international ticket (for travel on any airline) between the origin and destination airports.
The baggage must be consigned at the freight terminal before your flight and can only consist of personal clothing and articles including books, portable music instruments and portable sporting equipment.
Unaccompanied Baggage is carried on a 'space available' basis to the destination, not necessarily on the same flight as the passenger.
Note: You may be required to pay handling or government customs and quarantine charges at the destination for your unaccompanied baggage.
Note: The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have placed restrictions on uplifting personal effects and household goods to the USA. These restrictions also apply to unaccompanied baggage accepted as freight to the USA.
For more information call 1300 373 444 within Australia or your local Qantas Freight Sales office.
Packing, Labelling, Locking and Wrapping
All contents of your baggage need to be packed securely and appropriately. Do not pack valuables, essential medication or important documents in your checked baggage
You must ensure each item of checked baggage is labelled with your name, address and contact details. We recommend that passengers lock their checked baggage. However, it may be necessary for governments, airports or their contractors to open and inspect your baggage as part of the security screening process. If your baggage is locked, and you are not present when it is necessary to open it, the lock may be broken by security screeners.
For passengers travelling to or from the United States, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises that passengers can avoid the need for locks to be broken by using a TSA recognised locking mechanism, which can be opened by the TSA. For further information, visit the TSA website.
Passengers who choose to utilise baggage-wrapping services offered at some airports should allow additional time to complete this process before check-in. If security wrapping needs to be removed for inspection by governments, airports or their contractors as part of the security screening process it will not be replaced.
We are unable to advise passengers at the time of check-in whether baggage will need to undergo additional security checks.
+ In some cases, tickets issued by agents between 26 February 2013 and 30 March 2013 for travel from 31 March 2013 may be issued as per the previous policy. This will be shown on your ticket as an allowance in “pieces” rather than “kilograms”. If you are ticketed in “pieces” after 26 February 2013 the previous allowance for tickets issued prior to 26 February 2013 will apply.
# Some Qantas codeshare services on Emirates remain subject to regulatory approval.
* Excludes flights to/from Lord Howe Island, Olympic Dam and Mount Hotham.
