Checked Baggage Allowance
Checked Baggage Allowance
The amount of baggage you can check in for your flight varies depending on your itinerary, Qantas Frequent Flyer membership and other factors. Visit this page again before travel in case changes have occurred to your checked baggage allowance. Refer to our Conditions of Carriage page for further information.
Acceptance of Checked Baggage is subject to:
- our Conditions of Carriage;
- compliance with applicable size and weight limits;
- applicable laws and security measures including those imposed by airports; and
- payment of any applicable charges for additional or excess baggage.
Even if your baggage meets the above requirements, we may refuse to carry it if it is not properly and securely packed.
Checked Baggage Allowance
Checked baggage allowances on Qantas operated and marketed flights for adults and children (except infants) are set out below. To be carried without additional charge, your checked baggage must not exceed these allowances. Dimensions for checked baggage are calculated by adding together the width, height and depth of the piece of baggage.
For travel on other airlines, check the baggage allowances with the applicable carrier before you travel. You can find out the operating airline at Manage Your Booking.
Note: No single item of checked baggage may exceed 32kg (70lb).

^ International Travel is defined as travel between two or more countries including any flights within those countries when they are combined with international travel.
+ The Americas means the United States of America, Canada and South America.
Where possible, Qantas will endeavour to carry Checked Baggage on the same flight as the passenger. However, Checked Baggage may at times need to be transported on a later flight, in which case we will deliver your Checked Baggage to you unless you are required to be present for customs clearance.
Children and Infants
Children receive the same baggage allowance as adults. Infants receive the following allowance:
- No allowance on Australian domestic and regional flights.
- 1 piece to/from The Americas, total dimensions not exceeding 115cm (45in).
- 10kg (22lb) on all international routes (except The Americas).
- Adults accompanying infants are entitled to check in one collapsible stroller or a carry basket or bassinet (stowed in the aircraft hold). This is in addition to the normal free baggage allowance for adults.
Medical and Mobility Equipment
Passengers requiring it for their own use may also check in medical/life dependant equipment and two pieces of mobility equipment without additional cost. Visit our Mobility Assistance page for further information on travelling with assistive devices.
Sporting Equipment
Charges apply for sporting equipment where the total baggage exceeds the allowance. View further information on travelling with sporting equipment. You can add sporting equipment to your booking at Manage Your Booking.
Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club Members
Platinum, Gold and Silver Qantas Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club Members receive additional free checked baggage allowances:

Note: These additional allowances cannot be combined. For example, if you are both a Silver Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club Member, only one additional allowance applies.
Additional Baggage Allowance
Note: No single item of checked baggage may exceed 32kg (70lb)
If you wish to travel with more than the free checked baggage allowance, you can purchase an Additional Baggage Allowance before you go, for less than the cost of Airport Excess Baggage rates.
Airport Excess Baggage
If you are travelling with more than your allocated free baggage allowance and have not pre-purchased a sufficient Additional Baggage Allowance, you will be charged excess baggage rates at the airport. View our Airport Excess Baggage Rates before travel.
Unaccompanied Baggage
We offer an unaccompanied baggage service on most routes. This service may be a convenient and cost-effective alternative to paying excess baggage rates. You must hold a valid international ticket (for travel on any airline) between the origin and destination airports.
The baggage must be consigned at the freight terminal before your flight and can only consist of personal clothing and articles including books, portable music instruments and portable sporting equipment.
Unaccompanied Baggage is carried on a 'space available' basis to the destination, not necessarily on the same flight as the passenger.
Note: You may be required to pay handling or government customs and quarantine charges at the destination for your unaccompanied baggage.
For more information call 1300 368 747 within Australia or your local Qantas Freight Sales office.
Labelling, Locking and Wrapping
You must ensure each item of checked baggage is labelled with your name, address and contact details. We recommend that passengers lock their checked baggage. However, it may be necessary for governments, airports or their contractors to open and inspect your baggage as part of the security screening process. If your baggage is locked, and you are not present when it is necessary to open it, the lock may be broken by security screeners.
For passengers travelling to or from the United States, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises that passengers can avoid the need for locks to be broken by using a TSA recognised locking mechanism, which can be opened by the TSA. For further information, visit the TSA website.
Passengers who choose to utilise baggage-wrapping services offered at some airports should allow additional time to complete this process before check-in. If security wrapping needs to be removed for inspection by governments, airports or their contractors as part of the security screening process it will not be replaced.
We are unable to advise passengers at the time of check-in whether baggage will need to undergo additional security checks.
