Earthquake in Christchurch
Christchurch Airport has now reopened following the earthquake that affected the area on the 4th of September. Qantas services to the region will operate as scheduled.
Waiver of Conditions due to Christchurch earthquake
The following commercial policy outlines the options available to Qantas passengers who are holding a valid ticket on Qantas for travel on or before 6 September 2010 and who wish to make changes to their bookings.
Passengers may, without fee:
- Defer travel to/from Christchurch
- Return to the origin port via the most direct routing using Qantas
- Bypass Christchurch as a stopover point and continue to the next ticketed destination via the most direct routing using Qantas
- Change destinations. The value of the existing ticket can be used towards the purchase of a new ticket. If the new fare is more expensive than the existing ticket fare, the fare difference is payable by the passenger. Applicable taxes may apply
- Retain the value of the ticket in credit for future travel within 12 months of original ticket issue date. If the new fare is more expensive than the existing ticket fare, the fare difference is payable by the passenger. Applicable ticket taxes may apply
Conditions
- If the same booking class is not available, the lowest available class within the same cabin may be booked (eg Business or Economy)
- New travel dates must be prior to 18 Sep 2010
- Any third party costs/penalties, such as hotel or other ground operator fees incurred will not be waived by Qantas
- All other rules and conditions of the ticket remain unchanged
Refunds
- Any refund fees will be waived for tickets issued prior to 4 September 2010
- This excludes penalties imposed by suppliers or third parties
- To request a refund, return your ticket to the original point of purchase prior to 4 October 2010
Frequent Flyer Redemption Ticket Holders
Passengers travelling on redemption tickets are entitled to the same options and conditions as listed above.
Note: Passengers on partner airline services are able to re-book or re-route subject to redemption seat availability only

A small number of QantasLink Q400 aircraft have been temporarily removed from service making some changes to our schedule necessary. Contingency plans are in place to minimise any impact to our customers.
