Our Commitment to the Environment
Qantas, like all of us, has an important role to play in protecting the environment now, for a greener future. We are committed to doing all we can to help protect the environment for generations to come by recycling, implementing water and energy saving programs and reducing our carbon emissions. Qantas aims for world class environmental performance and is committed to achieving an ambitious target of 25% reduction in landfill by 2011.
In striving to achieve this target, we have introduced a new onboard recycling program on selected Domestic Economy services* . Qantas has partnered with Closed Loop Recycling in the development of this onboard recycling program, an industry leader in environmentally sustainable packaging and recycling solutions.
How you can help
The next time you travel within Australia*, we invite you to assist us by separating your recyclable items for collection by the cabin crew.
With your help, we aim to recycle approximately eight and a half million bottles, cups and cans per year through this program.
Our Contributions to Date
So far with help from our passengers and staff we have taken significant steps in helping reduce the amount of landfill we produce across the company. We currently:
- Recycle more than 390 tonnes of paper per year in Sydney and Melbourne.
- Recycle more than 200 tonnes of bottles per year in Sydney and Melbourne.
- Run recycling programs in The Qantas Club lounges within Australia for paper, cardboard and glass.
- Donate Qantas uniforms to charity to be used in the manufacturing of pillows and mattresses.
However, we can always do more and are continually looking for ways to reduce our waste. Qantas is working with key suppliers to source more environmentally friendly products. For example, our paper cups provided onboard are made from 35% recycled paper.
We are also actively involved in resource management including recycling, and water and energy efficiency projects. Find out more about the Spirit of the Environment.
