Environmental Engagement
At Qantas, we recognise that it has been our people who have helped make us a great airline group. When it comes to setting and achieving our environmental objectives, we know how important they are to moving our business forward along our sustainability journey. Ensuring our employees are supported to bring environmental responsibility into their everyday work, their communities and personal lives is a key component of our environmental strategy.
What we are doing
We know that our service and operational excellence largely rests on the engagement and support from our people. Together, we all must play our part. That is why we encourage our employees to participate in a variety of community and environmental programs throughout the year. Some of our major environmental engagement programs include:
Our internal Green Team
Within the Qantas Group we have an environmental sustainability focussed volunteer network made up of over one thousand employees. The team is made up of dedicated, engaged and sustainability conscious people. The team, which is open to all employees, works hard to raise environmental sustainability awareness and make a difference at home and at work.
Our Great Barrier Reef Foundation ZooX Ambassadors
Qantas supports and participates in the ZooX Ambassadors Program which was created by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to educate employees about the link between coral reefs, climate change and sustainability in business. As a ZooX Fund Investor Company we annually send five employee Ambassadors to the Reef (Heron Island on a four-day research field trip). After returning from this unique fieldtrip experience, the Ambassadors are able to share what they learned with their colleagues and are inspired to drive projects in their workplace that reduce our electricity, water and waste footprint.
Our eXcel Environment Award
As part of our strategy to support and recognise our employees' commitment and positive action for the environment, we created the internal eXcel Environment Awards. These awards are given to employees who have demonstrated proactive leadership to implement environmental projects throughout the business. Projects usually focus on improving our business' impact in regards to waste-to-landfill, resource consumption (water, electricity or fuel), noise, air quality, soil or water contamination, flora and fauna or land management. Each year, we highlight exceptional initiatives through the Annual eXcel Environment Award. However, there is no limit on the number of standard eXcel Environment Awards that we give out.
