The Humanitarian Fund will provide support to eligible charitable organisations to assist individuals and communities in need of relief as a result of humanitarian crises in Australia and overseas.
Qantas donates to the Australian Red Cross Victorian Floods Appeal
Following what is said to be the some of the worst flooding to ever hit Victoria, the Qantas Foundation donated $500,000 to the Australian Red Cross Victorian Floods Appeal in support of the flood victims. Throughout January 2011 flooding across western Victoria devastated more than 3,300 properties and spanned across more than 97 towns that caused a number of large scale evacuations. The Qantas Foundation donation is working to help communities in the recovery process, providing personal support and resources in recovery centres across affected areas.
Qantas Group supports Queensland Disaster Relief
Qantas worked alongside with the Queensland and Federal Governments and Emergency Services, to provide any assistance required. To date we have provided additional services, transport of freight, and provision of flights for priority passengers from towns that were evacuated. Qantas also committed to provide flights and additional services to affected areas once the waters subsided; including transport for SES volunteers from interstate. Our offer of assistance will remain open throughout the crisis and recovery period.
Alan Joyce met with the Queensland Premier in Brisbane and announced A$1 million donation to the Queensland Premier's Relief Fund from all of us at Qantas.
Donation to the Australian Red Cross to support victims of earthquake in China
The Qantas Foundation donated $25,000 to the Australian Red Cross to support relief efforts following the earthquake that struck north-west China in April 2010. This donation will fund the purchase of relief supplies, (including tents, clothing & bedding) food & water as well as psychosocial support for those affected by the disaster.
Donation to UNICEF to support communities in Samoa, Tonga and Indonesia
Following the devastation brought about by the tsunami in Samoa and Tonga and the earthquake in Indonesia, the Qantas Foundation donated $50,000 to UNICEF to support major relief efforts in these communities. This donation was made in conjunction with the appeals of Qantas' two major sporting partners - Australian Rugby Union Samoa and Tonga Tsunami appeal and Football Federation Australia Samoa and Indonesia disaster appeal.
Donation to 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal
In February 2009, the Victorian Government and Australian Red Cross launched the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund to support individuals and communities affected by the recent bushfires.
To support this appeal, the Qantas Foundation Humanitarian Fund has donated a total of $431 000 to the Australian Red Cross to help individuals and communities affected by the bushfires. In addition, Qantas employees donated an inspiring $190,500 to the Qantas Foundation Humanitarian Fund and a further $50,000 direct to the Australian Red Cross. Qantas matched the total employee donations of $240,500 to the Qantas Foundation Humanitarian Fund, dollar for dollar.
The Qantas Group has also provided further financial and in-kind assistance in the recovery and relief effort.
