Graduate Program - Finance

Stream Overview

Our Finance Graduate Program offers you, as a talented accounting graduate seeking a career in finance, the opportunity to develop your skills and experience within a global company. The breadth of Qantas' operations also means that you will gain maximum exposure to different business areas that operate almost as separate business units.

You will join a two-year Program involving four six-month rotations designed to give you experience in a number of key finance departments across the business, both in Group Finance and business segment finance teams. Through this you will gain an understanding of how different areas work together to provide finance support to the business, and experience in several core finance areas to equip you with excellent skills and commercial acumen to launch your career.

There are two Finance streams this year:

  • Finance - where you will gain experience within both Group Finance and business segment finance teams; and
  • Financial Services - where you will rotate through Reconciliations, Interline Processing, Collection Services and Revenue Reporting & Flight Reconciliation.

What we're looking for

  • A credit average or higher with an accounting major or degree

Graduate roles are primarily located in Sydney; however, if you are not living in Sydney, we provide a relocation assistance package to help with your move.

Training & Development

While we expect you to work hard and do your best, we will give you the skills and knowledge to get there. We place significant investment in the training and development of our graduates. In addition to regular development sessions with your fellow graduates we will support you to attend formal training programs.

  • Fully sponsored CA/CPA to obtain your professional accounting qualification
  • Technical training such as computer software and project management
  • Soft skills training such as persuasive communication and motivation
  • Qantas training such as cultural awareness and customer service
  • Support for role specific training where business benefit can be substantiated.

Graduates also participate in a formal performance planning and review process where you will receive frequent feedback and help with development planning.

What you'll be working on

Typical work assignments may include:

  • Preparation of month end journals and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Tracking business unit performance against key performance indicators.
  • Exposure to management accounting including P&L, variance analysis and impact of drivers.
  • Provision of financial reporting and analysis to enable business decisions.
  • Major projects such as annual budgets and EOFY forecasting and reporting.
  • Important events, such as the half yearly and end of year results.

Where you'll be working

We're a large organisation with a broad range of areas to explore. So the great thing is you're never going to run out of options and challenges in the Finance stream.

Your rotations in the Finance stream may include:

  • Working with Group Finance departments such as Financial Reporting, Planning and Analysis, Taxation, Financial Control, Treasury and Financial Services.
  • Supporting Business Segment Finance departments within our flying and other business segments

If you join the Financial Services stream, you will be rotating through the following areas:

  • Reconciliations - responsible for the reconciliation of 80% of balance sheet accounts for the airline.
  • Interline Processing - the team responsible for the pricing of tickets and financial settlement between Qantas and airlines around the world for the uplift of passengers, excess baggage and disrupted passengers.
  • Collection Services - this team is part of the 'Order to Collect' customer value stream and is responsible for billing and collecting from customers, conducting credit assessments and debt recovery.
  • Revenue Reporting & Flight Reconciliation - responsible for the accounting for and reporting on Qantas Airlines passenger revenue.

You will find a diverse number of career paths within Qantas that lead to more senior roles. We will work with you to determine your areas of interest and the positions that are best suited to your abilities and desired career path.

Past graduates are currently working in a number of different roles including Financial Analyst, Principle Financial Analyst, Manager Financial Consolidation & Control, Manager Treasury Risk, Head of Finance and Group Treasurer.
