Qantas Increases Services to South Africa

Qantas announced today it would increase services between Sydney and Johannesburg from five to six flights per week from 16 December 2008.

The Executive General Manager of Qantas Mr John Borghetti said the new service would be operated by a four-class B747-400 offering First Class, the award-winning Skybed sleeper seat in Business Class, recently introduced Premium Economy Class and Economy Class. The aircraft also features audio and video on demand in all four classes.

"South Africa is an important market for Qantas for both business and leisure travel. This new service will add another 350 seats per week, and more than 18,000 seats per year, on the route," Mr Borghetti said.

"We have recently introduced Premium Economy on our South African services offering customers a new inflight experience that includes a 19.5 inch-wide seat, generous recline and leg room up to a 40 inch pitch, an 8.4 inch in-arm touch screen video monitor, noise cancelling headsets and a new menu with premium wines."

The new Sydney-Johannesburg return service will operate at the same times as Qantas' current five-flights-per-week service. QF63 departs Sydney at 1030 and arrives in Johannesburg at 1530. The return service, QF64 departs Johannesburg at 1750 and arrives in Sydney at 1435 plus one day.

It will operate on Tuesdays until 27 January 2009 and then on Saturdays from 7 February 2009.

Mr Borghetti said Qantas intends to add a seventh weekly service on the route which would see the airline operate daily between Sydney and South Africa.

South African Airways will codeshare on all six services*.
