Qantas Attracts International Experts To Sustainable Tourism Seminars

Sydney, 25 August 2009

Qantas has confirmed Keith Bellows, Editor in Chief National Geographic Traveller Magazine and Justin Francis, Managing Director of Responsibletravel.com as guest speakers for the 2009 Qantas Sustainable Tourism Seminars.

Qantas Group Executive Commercial Mr Rob Gurney, said Keith Bellows and Justin Francis, both committed environmental tourism advocates will share their knowledge and experience with tourism operators across Australia at the Qantas Sustainable Tourism Seminars.

"Qantas has secured Keith Bellows and Justin Francis to join a team of national environment experts to present at the 2009 Qantas Sustainable Tourism seminars in September and October," said Mr Gurney.

"We have been able to build on the success of last year's inaugural series of tourism seminars by attracting international experts to this year's calendar.

"Tourism operators across Australia will again have the opportunity to gain valuable insights to assist in building or further developing sustainable tourism operations.

Mr Gurney said Keith Bellows and Justin Francis would be joined by a talented line up of national experts presenting at the free half day seminars, this year titled Investing for the Long Haul.

"Our national speakers include Sam Mostyn, Director of Sydney University's Sustainable Research Centre, Julie Taylor Mills, climate change specialist and Philip Toyne, the Director of Eco Futures and one of one of Australia's best known environmentalists," said Mr Gurney.

"Robyn Williams, ABC Science broadcaster and Aaron Wood, Young Australian Environmentalist of the Year, will also form the list of national speakers. Karl Schutte, Capital C, environment consultants, will conduct the workshop and modelling and environmental, social and sustainability campaigner and author, Kim McKay, AO will again facilitate the seminars in all states."

"Their perspectives along with local experts and case studies from the Qantas Sustainable Tourism Award Winners from each state will provide high level insight into the issues facing our industry as we move to a more sustainable operating base."

Qantas introduced sustainable tourism seminars in 2008 as part of its commitment to the Qantas Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism. This year's seminars will focus on the financial return on investment from building a business for the future.
