Qantas launches new B747 product from Brisbane to Los Angeles

Brisbane, 17 October 2011

Qantas has launched the first of nine reconfigured Boeing 747’s fitted with the popular A380 interiors as part of its $250 million investment in its Boeing 747 fleet.

The newly fitted B747 operated QF15 yesterday from Brisbane to Los Angeles and will continue to operate three return services per week, offering passengers the popular A380 seats and inflight entertainment onboard.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said since Qantas introduced the A380 in October 2008, there had been unprecedented demand for seats on the A380 fleet.

“Installing A380 style interiors on these B747 aircraft will give more passengers the opportunity to enjoy our award winning seats and on demand Panasonic inflight entertainment,” Mr Joyce said.

“The newly fitted B747 means a new premium flying experience for our customers, more comfort, more space and fully flat Skybed seats in Business.”

The second reconfigured B747 is scheduled to enter service by the end of the year taking the service to six return flights per week.

Each of the aircraft will be fitted with 364 seats: 58 Business, 36 Premium Economy and 270 Economy.

The seats in all three cabins have won awards for their design and comfort, including the 2009 Australian International Design Award for the Economy seat.

The B747 economy seat now includes an innovative foot net providing customers with extra comfort. The premium economy seat features a larger in-arm inflight entertainment screen and the Business cabin is fitted with fully flat Skybeds offering increased space comfort.

Along with the launch of the new B747 product a more tailored approach to Qantas’ international Economy service has also been introduced.

Enhancements to the Economy service include our customers being offered a continuous food and beverage service every sixty to ninety minutes on long daylight sectors.

New meal options will include cafe' style breakfasts on short overnight flights, new convenient Refresh packs for long overnight sectors, and a premium hot drink service.
