Water Conservation

Australia is a vast dry land and at Qantas we recognise the need to use fresh water sensibly and efficiently. Between 2007 and 2011 we successfully reduced our annual total water consumption by 19% as a result of our 'begreen' program despite growth in our operations. Our journey of improvement continues.
What we are doing
We are looking at water efficiency improvements in all areas of our operations by measuring our water consumption and investigating methods to reduce consumption of potable water. These include waterless urinal systems, fixing leaks, 'turn it off' campaigns and the use of grey-water where appropriate.
How you could help
- Take shorter showers. Use a shower timer and try to stay under four minutes.
- Install rainwater collection tanks
- Wash your car on your lawn using a bucket and sponge
- Install water saving showerheads and taps
- Consider grey water options for your home
- Fix leaks
- Water your garden only when really needed
- If you are buying a new clothes washing machine or dishwasher, choose a water efficient model that has a high water star rating
- Don't forget, every little bit helps
Case Study: Catering Centre in Adelaide
At Q Catering Adelaide, Qantas' Adelaide-based catering centre, our team received a 2008 Achievement Award by Adelaide Airport Authority to recognise the water savings they achieved.
Water meters confirmed that the facility reduced its average daily water consumption rate by over 60% between 2007 and 2008. These reductions were the direct result of initiatives like upgrading the ice machine, reporting and fixing leaks and changing flow rates on equipment. Since then, Q Catering has continued to monitor its water consumption rates through its water meters and has successfully identified and fixed leaks and inefficiencies in its facilities.
