Using Points for Rewards

Effective 10 February 2015, the names of our flight award options are changing:

  • Qantas & Partner Classic Awards will now be known as Classic Flight Rewards
  • oneworld® Classic Awards will change to oneworld® Classic Flight Rewards
  • Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Awards are now called Points Plus Pay - Flights
  • Flight Upgrade Awards have changed to Classic Upgrade Rewards
  • On Departure Upgrade Awards will be known as On Departure Upgrade Rewards

The changes are to name only, there will be no other changes to these award flight options.

Classic Flight Rewards

Classic Flight Rewards allow you to use your Qantas Points to book seats for yourself or any eligible family member on eligible flights^ on Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld® alliance and other airline partners* and affiliates. It is important to note that Classic Flight Reward availability is limited.+

For Qantas & Jetstar flights you could also choose a Points Plus Pay - Flight where you can earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on eligible flights.* When travelling on a Points Plus Pay - Flight, you can earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on eligible flights. Some partner airline flights can be combined with Points Plus Pay - Flights when booking on qantas.com.

Classic Flight Reward Features
Will I earn Qantas Points and Status Credits? No, you will not earn Qantas Points and Status Credits when flying on a Classic Flight Reward.
How many Qantas Points are required?
Does the points redemption amount include taxes, fees and carrier charges? No. For Classic Flight Reward flights, taxes, fees and carrier charges are payable in addition to the Qantas Points required, are subject to change and are quoted at the time of booking. However, points levels inclusive of taxes, fees and carrier charges are offered on eligible wholly Australian and New Zealand domestic and selected international (departing Australia) Classic Flight Rewards.

Can Points Plus Pay be used? Not for most Classic Flight Rewards, with the exception of travel entirely within Australia and selected international fares departing from Australia where the minimum points required are equal to the value of the Classic Flight Reward flight(s). There is, however, a second type of Reward you can book called 'Points Plus Pay - Flights' that allow you to use Points Plus Pay with a minimum of 5,000 points.* Find out more.
Can I request a Classic Upgrade Reward?  Classic Flight Reward seats cannot be upgraded to a different class. Find out more about using points to request a Classic Upgrade Reward on eligible flights.

How far in advance can I book? Bookings can be made up to 353 days in advance and up to 24 hours before scheduled departure, unless you are booking on qantas.com where you can book up to 2 hours before departure for domestic flights or up to 4 hours before departure for international flights. Some locations require earlier advance booking.
How many seats are available? Availability is limited, especially during peak times such as school and public holidays.  Some flights may not have any Classic Flight Reward seats available.+

exclamation Tip: If your chosen Classic Flight Reward is not available check again later as additional seats may be released closer to departure. Or, try booking a Points Plus Pay - Flight (different points may be required and separate conditions apply).
Can I cancel a booking? For Classic Flight Rewards, you can cancel your booking and request a refund of points redeemed prior to commencing travel however a Cancellation Refund Fee applies. There are no refunds of the points redeemed for Classic Flight Rewards once your travel has commenced. Note:  In accordance with the US Department of Transportation rules, customers who purchase an Reward ticket in the United States may cancel their booking and have their ticket refunded without incurring the Cancellation Refund Fee within 24 hours of ticketing when the ticket was purchased one week or more prior to scheduled departure of the first flight in the itinerary.

Can I change my booking? You can alter your booking online at Manage Your Booking.**Changes to a Classic Flight Reward will incur a Change Fee in points and may require the payment of additional points as well as any difference in the taxes, fees and carrier charges. For more information, please see the terms and conditions.

If you combine Classic Flight Rewards with non-Classic Flight Reward fares (“Commercial Fares”), the most restrictive fare condition of those Commercial Fares applies to the segments booked as Classic Flight Rewards for booking changes.  These bookings can only be changed by Qantas Contact Centres.  Service fees may apply.

exclamation Tip: If you used a credit card to pay for taxes, fees and carrier charges be sure to have it handy when making changes, as you'll be required to cover any differences with your original payment method.

What are the booking and fare conditions? Applicable fare conditions are provided at the time of booking. We recommend that you review the applicable fare conditions at the time of booking, as booking and fare conditions will vary. You can check the conditions of your booking at Your Bookings. 
Are there other Reward flight options? Yes, there is a second type of Reward flight you can book called ‘Points Plus Pay - Flights’. The number of Qantas Points required for a Points Plus Pay - Flight or Classic Flight Reward for the same itinerary may be different. Find out more. 
How does a oneworld® Classic Flight Reward differ from a Classic Flight Reward? oneworld® Classic Flight Rewards are based on the total distance travelled or return flights, unlike the other Classic Flight Reward options which are based on one-way sectors. There are also limitations on the carriers you can include in oneworld® Classic Flight Rewards and you can travel up to a maximum of 35,000 miles on one itinerary.
How many oneworld alliance airlines do I need to include in a oneworld® Classic Flight Reward? You need to include travel on at least two oneworld alliance airlines other than Qantas. oneworld Classic Flight Rewards are limited to travel on oneworld alliance airlines and cannot include travel on any other airline.
Can I include a Jetstar flight in a oneworld Classic Flight Reward itinerary? No. oneworld Classic Flight Rewards are limited to travel on oneworld alliance airlines and cannot include travel on any other airline.
How do I view Classic Flight Reward availability and book? To view and book Classic Flight Reward seats or combine Classic Flight Reward seats with a cash fare and be able to view options on a single results page:
1. Log in to your account at qantas.com
2. Select flight details and 'Search Flight', making sure "Search Classic Flight Rewards" is not selected.
3. Select from available flights which will appear as a seat icon in the Classic Flight Rewards column on the Select page
Note: Searching for Classic Flight Reward this way may not deliver all Classic Flight Reward options available to you. If your search results deliver little or no Classic Flight Reward availability or you are searching for flights on a route that we offer codeshare flights, we recommend that you search again using below method.

To view and book Classic Flight Reward options for all carriers on qantas.com when you don't want to see cash fares on the same screen:
1. Log in to your account at qantas.com
2. Select flight details, tick the 'Search Classic Flight Reward' checkbox
3. Select the flights you want from the options available
Note: When booking Classic Flight Rewards in this way you are unable to combine them with a cash fare or Points Plus Pay - Flight, or use points for taxes, fees and carrier charges. If you want to combine a Classic Flight Reward with a cash fare or Points Plus Pay - Flight.

Can I pay for taxes, fees and carrier charges using points as part of my Classic Flight Reward? For domestic Australia flights and international flights from Australia, you can use Qantas Points for taxes, fees and carrier charges on qantas.com only and ‘Search Classic Flight Rewards' is not selected.
For domestic New Zealand Classic Flight Rewards, you can use points for taxes, fees and carrier charges on qantas.com only and  ‘Search Classic Flight Rewards' is selected.

The above information is intended as a guide only. For further information on Classic Flight Reward, please refer to the terms and conditions.
+ Classic Flight Reward seats are subject to capacity controls and availability is limited, particularly around peak times such as school and public holidays. ^ Not all routes and cabin classes of Airline Partners and oneworld Alliance Airlines are available for Reward Flights. Exclusions and limitations may change from time to time. Qantas Loyalty does not guarantee the continued availability of any particular route or cabin class for Awards. Refer to the individual partner airline pages for any restrictions.
* Points Plus Pay - Flights are available on any flight with a QF or JQ flight number. As long as there is a seat available for sale, you can book a Points Plus Pay - Flight. The points required for an Points Plus Pay - Flight include taxes, fees and carrier charges (except any local airport fees or charges collected at the time of check-in) are subject to change, are variable and only valid when quoted at the time of booking. Reward flights must be booked at least 24 hours before scheduled departure (and other advance booking requirements may apply). unless you are booking on qantas.com where you can book up to 2 hours before departure for domestic flights or up to 4 hours before departure for international flights. Qantas Points may not be earned on some fare types or on some oneworld® alliance or airline partner flights. See the Airline Earning Table for eligible flights and earning classes. ** Changes must be made at least 24 hours before first flight departure. This feature is not available for Classic Flight Reward bookings that include Hong Kong or Canada, have Classic Flight Rewards combined with Commercial Fares, have two or more stopovers, bookings created using Multi-City itinerary option, itineraries that cannot be booked online, include a car rental, or that have been previously changed via phone. To make changes to your Reward booking please contact us. A Service Fee applies to all changes made via Qantas Contact Centres. Points change fees apply to all booking changes.
~ Bookings made or completed with the help of a consultant attract a 6,000-point fee per person (including children and infants occupying a seat) per booking for international bookings. A 3,500-point fee applies for all other bookings. If booking through Qantas Contact Centres in Australia or New Zealand the fee may be paid with money. This non-refundable fee applies only when making the initial booking. See the terms and conditions for details.
The taxes, fees and carrier charges can be paid by using an Accepted Payment Card.
# The option to combine a wholly Australian domestic and international Qantas, Jetstar and selected airline partner Classic Flight Reward departing from Australia with an Points Plus Pay - Flight or a cash fare is only available when ’Search Classic Flight Rewards' has not been selected.
β When combining a Classic Flight Reward with another fare in a single booking, points and Status Credits will not be earned on any Classic Flight Reward flights in the booking. If you combine Classic Flight Rewards with non-Classic Flight Reward fares (“Commercial Fares”), the most restrictive fare condition of those Commercial Fares apply to the segments booked as Classic Flight Rewards for booking changes, cancellations and refunds.  Please refer to the applicable Commercial Fare conditions for details.

Points Tables for Classic Flight Rewards and oneworld Classic Flight Rewards

Use the tables below to calculate the per-passenger points required for each Trip in your Classic Flight Reward booking. These tables should be read in conjunction with the following important notes:

  • Taxes, fees and carrier charges are payable in addition to the points required for Classic Flight Reward flights, are subject to change, are quoted at the time of booking and paid by using an Accepted Payment Card. In some cases members may be able to redeem points for all or part of these amounts.
  • Children aged two years and older will need to redeem the full number of Points required for a Classic Flight Reward.
  • Infant passengers under two years and not occupying a seat travel are not required to redeem Points to travel as long as the accompanying adult is travelling on a Classic Flight Reward. Taxes, fees and carrier charges may be payable for Infants accompanying other passengers travelling on a Classic Flight Reward booking.
  • No booking fees are payable when redeeming points for Reward Flights online at qantas.com. An Award Assistance Fee applies to bookings made through Qantas Contact Centres.

For travel entirely within Australia or for international travel on Qantas, Jetstar and selected flights on airline partners commencing in Australia, Classic Flight Reward flights may be combined with non-Classic Flight Reward flights ("Commercial Fares") in the same booking when booking at qantas.com and the 'Search Classic Flight Reward' checkbox is not ticked. The tables below will be used to calculate the per-passenger points required for the Classic Flight Reward portion of the booking. Find out more.

Important Information:
~~ If a Classic Flight Reward Trip includes any flight with a Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK) flight number and a flight number from an airline on the Qantas Classic Flight Reward table, the Qantas Points required for that Trip will be calculated using the lowest quoted points level of either:
a) the Qantas Classic Flight Reward table; or
b) the sum of points, breaking the Trip into multiple Trips wherever the carrier code changes between those carriers that are eligible for the Jetstar table and those carriers that are eligible from the Qantas table.
If the Classic Flight Reward Trip only includes flights with a Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK) flight number, or a combination thereof, the Jetstar Classic Flight Reward table will apply.
^^ US Airways is an affiliate of oneworld® member airline American Airlines.
^ Premium Economy is available on selected Qantas flights.
+ Business class is available on all Jetstar (JQ) flights, flights operated by Jetstar Asia (3K) and Jetstar Japan (GK).*

Jetstar Classic Flight Reward table (worldwide) excluding taxes

Points required for Classic Flight Rewards when travelling on flights operated by Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) and Jetstar Japan (GK) in the same trip.*

Note that this table does not apply to any Classic Flight Reward Trip which includes one or more flights from the Qantas Classic Flight Reward table. In this case the Qantas Classic Flight Reward table will apply.

Taxes, fees and carrier charges

You can redeem points for the taxes, fees and carrier charges for certain types of Classic Flight Reward bookings. For international bookings, the payment option is limited to cash^^ only.

For travel within Australia (Classic Flight Reward bookings made on or before 13 August 2013)

Important Information:
For Classic Flight Reward Trips booked until 31 August 2013, if the Trip includes any flight with a British Airways (BA) flight number, the Qantas Classic Flight Reward table only applies to that Trip if the oneworld® Classic Flight Reward table does not apply and the only flights with a British Airways (BA) flight number included in the Reward Trip are between these cities:
- Sydney and Singapore,
- Sydney and London via Singapore, and
- London and Bangkok, London and Singapore, London and Hong Kong or London and Tokyo.
This table does not apply to any Classic Flight Reward Trip which includes one or more flights with a British Airways (BA) flight number between any city pairings not listed above (see Partner Classic Flight Reward table for those Reward Trips).
Effective on and from 1 September 2013, all Classic Flight Reward Trips on British Airways (BA), other than British Airways Classic Flight Reward Trips which are part of a oneworld® Classic Flight Reward, will be calculated using the Partner Classic Flight Reward table. 
** Dragonair is an affiliate of oneworld® member airline Cathay Pacific Airways.

oneworld® Classic Flight Reward table (worldwide) excluding taxes, fees and carrier charges

The oneworld® Classic Flight Reward table is based on return flights, unlike the Qantas Classic Flight Reward table.

The oneworld Classic Flight Reward table only applies when your Reward Itinerary includes travel on at least two oneworld Alliance Airlines other than Qantas and does not include any travel on any airline that is not a oneworld Alliance Airline. Qantas flights operated by Jetstar Airlines (JQ, 3K or GK) cannot be included in oneworld Classic Flight Rewards.

International Classic Flight Reward bookings made on or after 14 October 2013.

From 14 October 2013 you can redeem Qantas Points for taxes, fees and carrier charges for International Classic Flight Reward bookings where travel commences in Australia. To use this option you must book online at qantas.com and ensure that the 'Show Classic Flight Reward options only' is not selected when searching for your flights. Taxes, fees and carrier charges are variable, they will be calculated individually for each trip in your Classic Flight Reward booking and displayed as a total points amount at the time of booking.

Points Plus Pay - Flights

You can use your Qantas Points to book any available seat on a Qantas flight with a QF flight number or Jetstar flight with a JQ flight number for yourself or any eligible family member. Points Plus Pay - Flights provides choice and flexibility, so you can choose the flight that suits your preferred travel times. And you'll earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on eligible flights^. Can I combine different airlines in my Points Plus Pay - Flight booking? Yes, you can combine your Qantas or Jetstar flight with a range of flights on other selected partner (as offered by Qantas from time to time)#

What are the booking and fare conditions?  Points Plus Pay - Flight conditions are available at the time of booking. We recommend that you review the applicable fare conditions at the time of booking, as these may vary. You can check the conditions of your booking at Your Bookings.
Can I request a refund or credit voucher? Refunds are only available if the fare conditions (provided at the time of booking) state the booking is refundable. Terms and conditions apply.

If a fare is non-refundable, you may be able to obtain a credit voucher to the commercial value of the Points Plus Pay - Flight booked, which can be used for Qantas flights within 12 months of the original booking creation date (subject to the original fare conditions). This does not apply to Points Plus Pay - Flight bookings on Jetstar flights. 

Can I change my booking? You can change your Points Plus Pay - Flight booking online here. This can only be done in accordance with the fare conditions (provided to you at the time of booking) which also set out applicable change and service fees which must be paid in money.
Are there other Reward flight options? Yes, there is a second type of Reward flight you can also book which is called a ‘Classic Flight Reward’. The number of points required for Classic Flight Rewards and Points Plus Pay - Flights for the same itinerary may be different.  Find out more.

The Qantas Points required to redeem a Points Plus Pay - Flight change with demand and can differ between bookings, even for the same itinerary. The points quoted in the Points Plus Pay - Flight booking processes are only valid when quoted at the time of booking. If you delay your booking or do not proceed to make your booking at that time, the points quoted may change. There is no fixed relationship between the price charged by the applicable airline for a seat and the number of points required to redeem a Points Plus Pay - Flight.
^^ Points Plus Pay allows you to choose the number of Qantas Points you redeem above a specified minimum level and pay for the remainder of the fare with an approved payment card (including VISA, MasterCard or American Express) to obtain your Reward. The minimum number of points required starts from 5,000 points per booking and is subject to change.
± Flight upgrades are subject to capacity controls and availability (which is limited). Classic Upgrade Rewards are not available on Classic Flight Rewards or international airfares booked in E, N, O, Q or X class (such classes may include Points Plus Pay - Flights and international Red e-Deal fares).
 Classic Flight Reward seats are subject to capacity controls and availability is limited, particularly around peak times such as school and public holidays. Some flights may not have any Classic Flight Reward seats available. The ability to redeem taxes, fees and carrier charges with Qantas Points for travel entirely within Australia and selected international flights (commencing in Australia) is only available when booking at qantas.com and ‘Search Classic Flight Rewards' is not selected. What is it? Classic Flight Rewards are fixed-price Reward fares that can be redeemed with Qantas Points.                            

Use your Qantas Points to purchase available seats being sold for cash on a Qantas or Jetstar flight with a QF or JQ flight number.                                 

How many Qantas Points do I need to redeem?                                   

Classic Flight Rewards have a fixed price and start from as little as 6,400 on Jetstar airlines and 8,000 on Qantas with taxes, fees and carrier charges payable in addition. Check how many points you need.

The points value of an available seat can vary and is shown at the time of booking. Points values for a Points Plus Pay - Flight always include taxes, fees and carrier charges (excluding local airport fees or charges collected at time of check-in). Plus, with Points Plus Pay you can mix the amount of cash and points you want to use.α
Do I earn Qantas Points and Status Credits when redeeming my points for a Reward? No, you will not earn Qantas Points or Status Credits on Classic Flight Rewards. Yes, just like when paying in cash, you can earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on Points Plus Pay - Flights. 
Can I redeem my points for flights on other Airlines? Yes, we offer a wide range of Classic Flight Reward options on Emirates, oneworld® alliance airlines and selected Qantas Frequent Flyer airline partners and affiliates.# Yes, you can combine your Qantas (QF) or Jetstar (JQ) flights with eligible flights on some airlines for onward travel.±

Classic Flight Rewards Explained

Our most popular Reward Flight option, Classic Flight Rewards^ provide Qantas Frequent Flyer members with a great way to fly for a fixed points level and are bookable from 353 days in advance up to 24 hours prior to departure, unless you are booking on qantas.com where you can book up to 2 hours before departure for domestic flights or up to 4 hours before departure for international flights (some locations require earlier advance booking). Seats are limited so we recommend you get in early.

Classic Flight Rewards are available on eligible flights on Qantas, Jetstar, Emirates, oneworld® alliance airlines and selected Qantas Frequent Flyer airline partners and affiliates.×

Booking a Classic Flight Reward at qantas.com

Option 1:

Perfect for browsing cash and Classic Flight Reward fares on a single results page. Use this option when searching for:

  • wholly domestic Australian Classic Flight Rewards on Qantas or Jetstar;
  • international Classic Flight Rewards departing Australia on Qantas and Jetstar (one-way or return only);
  • combining# a Classic Flight Reward with a cash fare or Points Plus Pay - Flightβ; or
  • when you want the option to use points for taxes, fees and carrier charges.

Step 1: Log in at qantas.com and select your destination, dates and travel class and select 'Search Flight', making sure "Search Classic Flight Rewards" is not selected.

Step 2: Classic Flight Reward availability, for Qantas (QF) and Jetstar (JQ) and eligible partner airline flights, will appear as a seat icon in the Classic Flight Rewards column on the Select page. Available flights will display a seat icon in the Classic Flight Reward column.

Note: Searching for Classic Flight Rewards via Option 1 may not deliver all of the Classic Flight Reward options available to you on a particular itinerary. If your search results deliver little or no Classic Flight Rewards availability or you are searching for flights on a route that we offer codeshare flights on, we recommend that you search again following the instructions for Option 2 to see all options available to you on qantas.com.

Option 2:

Great for when you want to see all Classic Flight Rewards options on qantas.com and you don't need to see cash fares on the same screen. Use this option when you want to search for:

  • international Classic Flight Rewards on Qantas, Jetstar and over partner airlines for greater global network options;
  • domestic Classic Flight Rewards on Qantas, Jetstar and our domestic partner airlines;
  • oneworld Classic Flight Rewards;
  • multi-city or multi-cabin Classic Flight Rewards; or
  • when you want the option to use points for taxes, fees and carrier charges for wholly domestic New Zealand travel.

Step 1: Log in at qantas.com and select your destination and dates. Select the 'Search Classic Flight Rewards' checkbox then select 'Search Flight'.

Step 2: Select the flights you want from the range of Classic Flight Rewards available to you online.

Note: When booking Classic Flight Rewards in this way you are unable to combine them with a cash fare or Points Plus Pay - Flight, or use points for taxes, fees and carrier charges. If you want to combine a Classic Flight Rewards with a cash fare or Points Plus Pay - Flight refer to search Option 1 (above).

Points Plus Pay - Flights Explained

Points Plus Pay - Flights~ allow you to use your Qantas Points to book any available seat on a Qantas or Jetstar flight. Points Plus Pay - Flights provide choice and flexibility, so you can choose the flight that suits you.

With Points Plus Payα you can use a minimum of 5,000 points for your booking. After selecting your preferred fares, you can use the Points Plus Pay slider on the 'Check' page to change the mix of cash and points.

With Points Plus Pay - Flights you can use your Qantas Points to book any available seat on any Qantas or Jetstar flight with a QF or JQ flight number. ~ In addition, when booking a Points Plus Pay - Flights, you can combine your Qantas flights with selected flights on some airlines for onward travel to other great destinations.±
