"How I Travel" with Homewares Maven Kendall Knox

Kendall Knox

The importer of antique and vintage homewares at Olive Ateliers, this Los Angeles-based Aussie shares why the South of France has a special place in her heart.

You source items from all over the world for your brand, Olive Ateliers. What keeps you coming back to the South of France?

Kendall Knox from Olive Ateliers

The ease of living, the crumbling architecture, the art and the ambience. Everything is cosy and grown-in. It’s a place that knows itself. I particularly love Avignon, Provence and Montréal, which is a little off the beaten track but beautiful.

What are your most-loved finds from the region?

Biot jars, which are classic French antique vessels. We just imported some; they’re creamy coloured, beautifully shaped and so gorgeous to look at. What draws me to a piece is the history it holds and the conversation it starts.

Where do you stay when you’re in the area?

Camellas Lloret

Camellas Lloret in Montréal is a stand-out.

What do you do to make a hotel room feel homey?

I love having all my clothes laid out so I know what my options are. I also make sure my toiletries are set up – there’s nothing worse than rummaging through bags trying to find your concealer when you’re 20 minutes late and jet-lagged.

Your travel essential?

If you could pack only one pair of shoes?

Louis Vuitton loafers

A few years ago I splurged on a pair of Louis Vuitton loafers. They are timeless, sturdy and beautiful. I can wear them out at night and feel really special without needing a heel.

What’s your favourite place for a meal?

We often fly into and out of Paris and weirdly always seek out Asian food. Last trip, I had the best ramen of my life at Kodawari Ramen, which has two branches in the city.

And for a nightcap?

Arena Cafe

In Paris we love Château Voltaire, near the Louvre. In the South of France, any local red wine on your Airbnb balcony is heaven on earth.

What’s the first thing you do when you get home?

I have a hot shower and a cuddle with my dogs. I’m pregnant with my first baby so those priorities are likely to change soon!
