What to Do in Hong Kong – According to Qantas Frequent Flyers

Hong Kong City Skyline

Hong Kong, with its twinkling harbour and bustling streetlife, makes for a brilliant short break, whether it’s a last-minute getaway packed with shopping and cocktails or a milestone birthday celebrated with harbour sails and mountain hikes. We asked Qantas Frequent Flyers to share the moments that made their recent trips to the Fragrant Harbour unforgettable.

“I shopped all day without even stopping to eat.” – Simone McMaster, Bronze Frequent Flyer.

“It was a last-minute trip and my first time to Hong Kong. I went with seven girlfriends, some who’d visited before. We stayed at the Four Seasons in Central (pictured, left) and took the Star Ferry to explore Kowloon (Temple Street in Kowloon pictured, right).

“A friend got us access to The China Club in Central – it’s a members-only club spanning the top three floors of the Bank of China building, decorated with art and antiquities reminiscent of 1930s Shanghai. The food was delicious, especially the Peking duck, which is carved and presented tableside.

“One day we took the MTR to Shenzhen to visit the huge Wanda Plaza shopping mall. It has the highest indoor escalator in the world. I’d never seen anything like it and I shopped all day without even stopping to eat. There are so many places in Hong Kong to have a drink – we went to The Aubrey, a Japanese restaurant and bar on the 25th floor of the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel for a cocktail.

“There’s just so much to do in Hong Kong and the customer service is incredible. Everywhere you go, they genuinely want to look after you. We had the best time and we’re getting together soon to plan our next trip.”

Simone flew Brisbane to Hong Kong via Sydney.

“I always stay at the Island Shangri-La in Central for the panoramic view of Victoria Harbour and The Peak.” – Aimee Jordan, Platinum Frequent Flyer

Aimee Jordan in Hong Kong

“I go to Hong Kong often for work but this trip was with my husband for my 30th birthday – it was extra special being able to enjoy the city at my leisure. I always stay at the Island Shangri-La in Central for the unbeatable location, panoramic views of Victoria Harbour and The Peak and the hotel’s direct connection to Pacific Place shopping mall. It’s in the cultural heart of Hong Kong, surrounded by world-class restaurants and just a 10-minute stroll from the Peak Tram (pictured).

“For my birthday we sailed across Victoria Harbour at sunset with Aqualuna aboard an iconic red-sail junk boat. Hong Kong has great bars; I love the cocktails at Mott32 and we also went to Ho Lee Fook where I ordered the Lucky Buck, which is made up of Ballantine’s Scotch, yuzu curd, honey, orange and Fever Tree ginger beer, served in a lucky gold cat with a waving arm. We explored the affluent Mid-Levels neighbourhood west of Central – it’s filled with cool little alleyways – and ate dumplings for breakfast, which is always a highlight! I loved riding the famed Mid-Levels escalator from Central to get there. At 800 metres in length, it’s the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator system and lined with restaurants and shops.

“Hong Kong is so diverse. You can experience urban life but also get out into nature. We hiked Dragon’s Back (pictured), the final section of the 50-kilometre Hong Kong Trail. You walk through trees to the summit for stunning 360-degree views across the bays. It gives you a sense of how the people who live in the city spend their weekends.”

“There are so many great hiking trails that are easy to access from the city.” – Beverly Ng, Platinum Frequent Flyer

“Not many people realise that Hong Kong offers numerous hiking trails that are easily accessible via public transport. I took on the Twin Peaks route, starting at Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park through to the seaside town of Stanley. I also hiked High Junk Peak Country Trail [pictured], which has fantastic views of Clear Water Bay. Another little-known gem is Cheung Chau. Only a 35-minute high-speed ferry from Central Pier, the island is home to Cheung Po Tsai Cave – a secret pirate hide-out where treasures were once hidden.”

“Our family loved experiencing Hong Kong during Chinese New Year.” – Meishana Bargh, Bronze Frequent Flyer

“Chinese New Year is spectacular in Hong Kong. Colourful lions and dragons dance through the city streets and give blessings. I stayed with my husband and two kids at the Conrad by Victoria Harbour. It’s perfectly positioned above shopping hub Pacific Place, with rooms spacious enough for the whole family. We spent a day exploring Repulse Bay, in the southern part of Hong Kong Island, before heading to The Murray hotel for the Marimekko Afternoon Tea with friends. We used Qantas Points to book and getting upgraded to Business at the gate was the best surprise.”

“Cocktails, pampering and art make Hong Kong the perfect destination for a girls’ trip.” – Belinda Dean, Bronze Frequent Flyer

“We turned a visit to Hong Kong for a friend’s wedding into a fabulous girls’ weekend. The wedding reception was held at The Peninsula, known as the Grande Dame of the Far East. The hotel’s cosy drinking spot, The Bar, had great cocktails – including the signature Cognac Saga with sake. We also treated ourselves to some pampering at Oro Spa in Central. Seeing the works of Japanese ‘rainbow artist’ Ay-O at the M+ Gallery [pictured], in the new West Kowloon Cultural District, was another highlight.”
