Qantas Frequent Flyers Share Their Best Points Tips when Shopping

Whether you’re planning on using Qantas Points for round-the-world trips or flight upgrades, being smart about earning points on the ground can add up to some incredible experiences. Here, Qantas Frequent Flyer members share their top tips on how to take your points balance sky-high while shopping for groceries, fashion and everything in between.

“I’m always refreshing the Qantas App to see what points have come through – and when it comes time to book flights, seeing all my points there is really exciting.” – Brooke Ogle, NSW

“Earning Qantas Points is addictive once you start. I’m always refreshing the Qantas App to see what points have come through – and when it comes time to book flights, seeing all my points there is really exciting. My goal is to earn enough points to cover tickets to fly Business to the United States for me and my husband. We go to Los Angeles once or twice a year – it’s our home away from home.

“My top tip for other Frequent Flyer members is to install the Qantas Shopping Points-Prompter browser extension on your computer. It lets you know when and where there are point-earning opportunities while online shopping and has helped me accrue significantly more points than I would have otherwise. If I’m searching for a particular product and there are multiple places to purchase from, I’ll always click on the website that says, ‘Earn Qantas Points’.

“When I needed to buy hiking shoes for one of our trips to LA, I shopped at Platypus online and earned points.

“My other recommendation is to start shopping early for birthday or Christmas gifts. Waiting until the bonus points offers start and purchasing in advance has really helped me boost my balance.

“I also subscribe to email mailing lists with Qantas and its partners to stay updated on promotions. I earn Qantas Points with Everyday Rewards and I check for alerts on the Everyday Rewards App about bonus points at, for example, BWS when you spend a minimum amount. It’s those little side purchases outside of my weekly shop, when bonus points are available that can be converted to Qantas Points, that help boost your balance.

Whether you’re online shopping and want to know how you can maximise points – from buying new sneakers or stocking up on snacks – there are thousands of ways to earn Qantas Points through your everyday shopping habits. You could earn even more points if you use a Qantas Points earning credit card. Discover ways to earn at qantas.com/earnpoints.

“We were able to earn 50,000 Everyday Rewards points, which converts to 25,000 Qantas Points, simply by using gift cards to purchase household items.” – Ryan McNamara, Victoria

“I’ve gained about half of my points balance through Woolworths and Everyday Rewards. Woolworths frequently offers bonus points when buying gift cards for a number of retailers. When my wife and I moved into a new house, we had a lot of big-ticket items we had to shop for and we were able to earn about 50,000 Everyday Rewards points, which converts to 25,000 Qantas Points, simply by using gift cards to purchase these household goods. We're big fans of using gift cards to also pay for presents and hotel stays.

“Each week, before I do my grocery shopping, I purchase an Everyday WISH Digital Gift Card from Qantas Marketplace, which earns me 3 points per $1 spent. I can then use it at Woolworths to pay for my items so I earn those original points in addition to gaining Everyday Rewards points, which can then be converted to Qantas Points. I use my Qantas Points-earning credit card to pay for those gift cards, which allows me to earn another point per $1. This means I’m effectively triple-dipping on a transaction. Once you start doing clever things like that, the points just keep adding up.

“I’m a bit of a sneaker fan and I like being able to score more points when buying with brands, including Platypus and Hype DC. To do this,  I just scan my Qantas Frequent Flyer member card in-store when buying footwear.

“In August this year, we’ll be holidaying on a round-the-world trip to celebrate my wife’s 30th birthday. We booked a Oneworld Round the World Reward ticket using Qantas Points and we’ll visit places such as New York, London, Edinburgh and Shanghai. We’ll be joined by my wife’s parents who are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. We’ve been helping them by sharing lots of tips and tricks – so all four of us are travelling on points for the whole journey, which is just amazing.”

“You’ve always got to be thinking, can I earn points on this transaction?” – Keely Allport, SA

“My friends know me as the ‘Points Queen’. One of the best tips I share with them is to sign up to Everyday Rewards Extra subscription from Everyday Rewards, which costs $70 per year – as I use Everyday Rewards to help me boost my Qantas Points balance. Everyday Rewards Extra gives you double the number of Everyday Rewards points at Woolworths and BIG W, which can be converted to Qantas Points, as well as 10 per cent off your Woolies grocery shop every month. I’ve got all my family and friends signed up to this now. If someone registers using my referral link we both earn 1,500 Everyday Rewards points. When you collect 2,000 Everyday Rewards Points, these then convert into 1,000 Qantas Points, which adds up fast.

“I'm always checking the Everyday Rewards App and boosting my offers. I check the BIG W promotions regularly, too, and if there is an item on sale that comes with a lot of points, I'll stock up on it.

“My partner and I have a shared goal to keep our current points statuses and we'd like to earn over 150,000 Qantas Points per year so that we can maintain Points Club memberships, which offers extra benefits. I’m on the Points Club Plus tier, which allows me to access Qantas Club airport lounges. I also get 10 per cent off Qantas Wine, earn more points when I book flights and receive extra luggage allowance on Qantas flights.

“The best part? These incentives also allow you to keep earning points when you make use of them. For example, I’m a big fan of buying through Qantas Wine. They offer some amazing bonus points and the Points Club Plus discount means I can select a box of wine for $400 and it will earn me up to 40,000 Qantas Points – that could equate to return flights to New Zealand!
