Cartier's Classic Baignoire Design Finds an Elegant Update in Mini Form

The latest release of this nonconformist timepiece is streamlined and striking.
Watches that deviate from the circular form are becoming more popular than ever and it’s an area in which Cartier has always excelled. From the bell-like shape of the Cloche to the wonky crescent of the Crash, the brand is the ultimate horological shape-shifter.
As far back as 1912, Louis Cartier, a grandson of the brand’s founder, took the traditional round watch case and elongated it into an oval, creating the origins of what came to be known as the Baignoire. The design remained an exclusive model reserved for top clients until 1958, when it evolved into the watch we know today. Its name translates as “bathtub” in French but actually refers to the oval shape of the VIP seats found in opera houses, underscoring the artistic nature of the piece.

The Baignoire was redesigned in 2023 but more recently, the sensual curves have adopted a new colour scheme. In this iteration, a yellow-gold case encircles a plum-coloured lacquer dial, complemented by a brushed calfskin strap that’s secured with a classic ardillon buckle. The watch is powered by a quartz movement and Cartier’s trademark sapphire cabochon crown adds a welcome touch of ostentation.
Measuring 24.6 millimetres long and 18.7 millimetres across, the Baignoire Mini’s diminutive size means that it’s a timepiece primarily aimed at women. But that hasn’t stopped its distinctive form from being spotted on the wrists of fashion-forward men from Paul Mescal to Tyler, the Creator. Not surprising given the enduring strength of its design.
